The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service designated 9,577,969 acres in California, Oregon, and Washington that meet the definition of critical habitat for the northern spotted owl. State and private forestland was excluded from this designation. The approximate totals by state are outlined below:
- Washington: 2,918,067 acres
- Oregon: 4,557,852 acres
- California: 2,102,050 acres
