Alan and Ruby Walker of Curlew have been honored as Washington Tree Farmers of the Year by the Washington Tree Farm program. Tree Farmer of the Year chairman Tom Fox pointed to the Walkers as a family looking to pass tree farming onto the next generation. They’re hands-on and offer active land stewardship and volunteerism to help understand tree farming is sustainable and good for the economy. The Walkers were first nominated for their county and then area, competing against farmers nominated elsewhere in the state. They will go on to compete for regional tree farmer next year and national tree farmer the next year.
